Pokémon Scarlet opens up the Paldea region and mostly leaves the decision of where to go next in your hands. After choosing Sprigatito, Fuecoco or Quaxly, you head out from the academy with three separate stories waiting across the map. You can chase Gym Badges, deal with Team Star’s bases or hunt down enormous Titan Pokémon. Koraidon makes getting around much easier as the journey goes on, carrying you across open fields, mountains and water instead of keeping you tied to traditional routes.

The open world changes the usual Pokémon routine quite a bit. Wild Pokémon are visible as you travel, and you can explore much of Paldea in whatever order catches your interest. Battles still use the familiar turn-based setup, but Terastallizing gives them another layer by changing or strengthening a Pokémon’s type during a fight. Scarlet also supports four-player local wireless and online play, so parts of Paldea can be explored alongside other trainers rather than always travelling alone.
