Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! brings the trip through Kanto back with a few big changes to the old routine. Pikachu stays with you from the beginning, riding on your shoulder and reacting to things you find along the way. Wild Pokémon can be seen wandering around instead of hiding in random encounters, so you usually know what you’re walking into. Catching them borrows the throwing idea from Pokémon GO, while battles against trainers, Gym Leaders and Team Rocket stick much closer to the Pokémon formula people already know.

There’s plenty here that goes beyond reaching the Pokémon League. You can dress up your trainer and Pikachu, hunt for different Pokémon around Kanto and eventually take on Master Trainers who specialize in individual species. A second person can also drop into the adventure on the same Switch, while local wireless and online play cover battles and trading. Pokémon GO connectivity is included too, letting compatible Kanto Pokémon—including Alolan forms and Meltan—make the trip over from the mobile game.
